Fall of Varrock

A Kingdom Alone - the regional campaign phase

From the Fall of Varrock Wiki - Main Story Quest 5. After the Southern Watch, Duke Horacio and General Zo explain why Lumbridge cannot retake Varrock alone - and open the four strategic problems the surviving kingdoms must solve first. Short, dialogue-only, and one of the biggest unlocks in the game.

The standard flies at the Southern Watch. For the first time in twelve years Misthalin has taken ground back - and now comes the uncomfortable conclusion. A Kingdom Alone begins the moment First Reclamation ends: the journal reads "Duke Horacio wants a report on the kingdom's position after establishing the Southern Watch." There is nothing to fight and nothing to fetch. Go and talk.

The quest

  1. Report to Duke Horacio - in the Lumbridge command area, by the market. He has heard the standard is flying. He also has a question he does not think you will enjoy, and sends you one tile south to the man who worked it out.
  2. Speak with General Zo - "Think we can take it?" Answer however you like; every answer arrives at the same place. Lumbridge survived, rebuilt a fighting force, reopened roads and planted a post beneath Varrock itself - and if it marched on the city today, it would lose. The Southern Watch proved the enemy can be pushed back. It did not prove Lumbridge can finish the job alone.
  3. Report back to the Duke - "We stop pretending Misthalin is the only kingdom left in Gielinor."
  4. The strategy discussion - Falador still stands. Kandarin still trades. People still live beyond the Salve. The Wilderness keeps secrets older than Varrock's ruin, and the desert remembers what Misthalin's scholars forgot. Nobody is coming yet - so find out what each problem actually requires, and solve it.

Quest complete: 2 Quest Points, and the world opens. If you close the chat box mid-discussion, talk to the Duke again and it picks up where it left off.

The four problems - PREPARING FOR VARROCK

The main campaign no longer points at one next quest. Four standing entries appear in your Quest Journal (::quests, the side panel, and the stock quest tab) and stay there until each is solved. Work on them in any order; progress in one may open opportunities in another. All four must be solved before the Council of Gielinor convenes and authorises a sustained assault on Fallen Varrock.

ObjectiveThe problemWhere to start
BREACH - AsgarniaHow do we get an army into Fallen Varrock? Falador has the soldiers, engineers and weapons Misthalin lacks - but the White Knights are at war with the Kinshra and cannot simply march east.Falador. First quest: At the White Wall.
SECURE - MorytaniaWhat protects Misthalin while its army is fighting at Varrock? The goal is the Salve Accord: no crossing, mutual action against violators, a stable eastern border. An accord, not an alliance. The River Salve. First quest: Across the Salve.
UNDERSTAND - Wilderness, then DesertWhat actually happened to Varrock? Everyone knows what people saw. The planners will not send an army into the city without knowing why the catastrophe was so abnormal - or whether the same danger remains beneath it. This one has an order: the Wilderness first, then the Kharidian Desert, then whatever Senntisten still remembers. The Wilderness. First quest: The First Scar. No PvP kill is ever required for the story; the Wilderness is simply dangerous ground.
SUSTAIN - Kandarin + War EffortHow do we keep an army alive once it reaches Varrock? One battle empties the stores; now imagine feeding thousands for weeks. Restore the transport and trade the Fall broke - Spirit Trees, gliders, Fairy Rings, an eastern convoy - and combine it with the realm's own War Effort.Kandarin. Major quest: The Long Road East.

Type ::strategy at any time for the current state of all four; it also opens the Quest Journal on the first unsolved one. On login the journal reminds you with a single line rather than four.

What it does not do

Completing A Kingdom Alone does not unlock Falador, Morytania, the Wilderness or Kandarin themselves - those are open-world locations whether or not you have done the quest, and ordinary travel, towns, bosses, public wars and Rogue camps stay as they were. The quest unlocks the regions' story campaigns: their main quests, story conversations, and the ability for those arcs to solve the four problems above.

What comes after

Each regional campaign is separate content and opens as it ships. When BREACH, SECURE, UNDERSTAND and SUSTAIN are all solved, the Council of Gielinor reviews the strategic work and authorises the first major assault on Fallen Varrock - a battlefield success, not a reclamation. See Marches and the reconquest for the war you can already fight in the meantime.
